On Monday 6th November, Beckfoot Upper Heaton were lucky to have the Science Museum Group pay the school a visit to celebrate Tim Peakes journey into space and time spent on the International Space Station (ISS). His Soyuz capsule, in which he returned to Earth, is on display in the Science and Media Museum in Bradford. The whole of Year 7 and 8 were treated to an exciting science show delivered by the London Science Museum. Students learned how rockets leave the Earth's gravitational pull by some exciting demonstrations involving liquid and gaseous fuels. There were bangs and flashes.
To coincide with the Science show, we also transported 50 Year 8 students to the Science & Media Museum on Tuesday 7th November. A full day of hands on activities were laid on to several Bradford Schools. The purpose was to inform students of the amazing space programme taking place on the ISS, in which Tim Peake recently travelled to. We saw the Soyuz capsule which returned him safely to Earth and attended a series of activities and IMAX 3D show, which was truly breathtaking, as we actually felt we were orbiting the Earth on the ISS and taking space walks outside of the station.
Next we will be welcoming the Samsung Virtual Reality bus to our school so students in Years 9 and 10 can sample what life is like on the ISS and travel back to Earth in the Soyuz capsule in an amazing virtual journey. Watch this 'space' for photos and highlights of this event happening at only a handful of Bradford schools.
