Where did the past 15 weeks go?

I can’t quite believe that we are breaking up today for the Christmas holidays.

We have had the pleasure of the company of students from Beckfoot Heaton Primary School this week. Their Year 6 students came to school on Monday to watch our Macbeth production and on Wednesday their Year 5 students came to see our first ever Jingle Beats show which was produced by our BTEC music students under the guidance of Miss. Dickson and Mrs. Ragan. Both events were fantastic and a reminder of how far we have come as a school and community.

Last week we had the Tim Peake Samsung Space Descent VR Bus experience into school; it was amazing. Our Year 9 and 10 students got to visit the bus and upon entering we brought into the world of space travel. They experimented with computer programmes, tried on virtual spacesuits, learned about life in space and, most spectacularly, took a Virtual Reality (VR) trip with Tim Peake from the International Space Station back to earth. It was a 12-minute VR journey that was simply breathtaking. I was fortunate enough to experience the tour as were many of our staff. These are days that will live long in the memory and I am delighted that Mr. Drimer and the Science team managed to secure such an amazing event for us.

I want to let you know about some staff developments. Last week Mrs. Gatenby left to pursue another role outside of education and she will be missed by both staff and students. She will be replaced by Ms. Godula who joins us in January. Today we say goodbye to two other members of staff for very different reasons. Mrs. Alleyne leaves today to get some rest prior to the imminent arrival of her second child. It is such an exciting time for her and her family and we wish them well. Mrs. Levinson, who has managed our catering facilities for many years, also leaves today to begin her well-earned retirement. She has been a huge part of this school over the years and she will be greatly missed. I very much hope she will be happy and visit us regularly in the months and years ahead. Thank you Linda.

I have also been fortunate enough to be able to appoint Mr. Ward and Mr. Wrightson to the roles of Deputy Headteacher in school. They too have been a big part of this school and their promotions are very much deserved. Mr. Ward will lead on Curriculum, Assessment and Data and Mr. Wrightson on Teaching Quality and staff CPD. I am thrilled that they feel they want to continue their careers at BUH.

Finally, thank you so much for your continued support for our school and students. We are excited about what is around the corner in 2018 but, for now, can I you wish you a very happy, peaceful and safe Christmas and New Year.

Simon
