I absolutely detest this weather! One of the most difficult decisions a Headteacher takes is the one to close their school. Thankfully this is a rare occurrence. At the beginning of the week I was happy and optimistic that the snow would miss us. On Tuesday and Wednesday we had managed to clear the site and open as normal. Colleagues who live in areas where the snow was far worse than the conditions in Heaton, had managed to get through, and our students were in school safely. Everything then began to conspire against us when the heating failed yesterday and the weather took a turn for the worst. Our entire school community of parents, carers, staff and students was magnificent and I’m so grateful for your collective support.
I am acutely aware of the difficulties that closing the school causes. However, in making the decision, there is a single priority; the safety of our students and adults in our community.
We consider the condition of the site, the ability of students (and staff) to get to school safely and we have to be certain that we can get everyone home at the end of the day.
I really try to make a decision early and then to inform everyone as quickly as possible. A late decision to close is unhelpful. Hopefully information on the website, Bradford Schools Online, the Media and ConnectED to parents and careers have ensured that everyone knows quickly that school is not open. If you have had any difficulties in accessing this communication, please let me know.
I am hoping that the weather will enable us to open tomorrow. Whilst attempts to clear the site this morning were not successful, the forecast looks more promising and manageable. We have hired a snow plough and gritter to clear the site this evening and we hope for better conditions overnight.
Meanwhile, there are resources on the website and online which all students can access. We are in the process of re-working the timetable for the final few Year 11 mock exams (indeed, our Year 11 students have been amazing in the last two weeks!) and we will have details of the amendments for students upon their return.
I thank you all for your patience and look forward to some better weather!
