Transition Year 6 to Year 7
Here at Beckfoot Upper Heaton we aim to make the transition process as smooth as possible as we understand it can be an anxious time for many students and their families.
From the onset we work with students to help them settle in, make friends and build upon their Primary school experiences.
Your child will be encouraged to set high aspirations for themselves, demonstrate our Beckfoot Upper Heaton values and work on developing their Beckfoot Upper Heaton skills which are critical for success.
Through our transition programme we ensure that Year 7 students get off to the best start possible.

Transition Events
From Friday 28th May you will be able to visit more sections within this Year 7 Transition area of our website where you will find everything you need to know about how Transition will work and what you and your child can expect. There will be a virtual tour of school, videos to introduce you to key members of staff, and vlogs from some of our students.
Our Transition Day will take place on Wednesday 7th July 2021. Your child will come into school for the whole day and get a taste of what it’s like to be a Beckfoot Upper Heaton student. More information about the arrangements for this day will follow very soon after the half term break.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please get in touch with us at Reception@beckfootupperheaton.org. No question is too big or too small! If you are thinking it, I am sure other families are too.
The Transition Team
Getting to know each other before starting at Beckfoot Upper Heaton is also vitally important.
Leading up to the Transition period, our Transition Team go out to visit each Primary school to talk to class teachers and students to gather information which will help us make the transition as comfortable as possible. We have an informal chat with students individually, helping to alleviate any concerns they may have about the move.
Be Awesome Go Big
A package to help Year 6 students transition into Year 7. It is designed to be motivational, helpful and reassuring and to help young people feel valued, loved, encouraged and equipped for the journey ahead.
The project comes from PiXL Club and Hachette Children’s Group and resources have been created to prepare students for their transition to secondary school. The lessons are based on the books You Are Awesome by Matthew Syed (you will have your own copy of this from us to keep) and Go Big by Matthew Burton. Each session will take you through some big ideas to help you on your way to join us in September.
Our Year 7 Personal Development Lead will be running sessions with the pupils in their primary setting. Sessions may also be delivered by primary teachers as arranged with Ms. Rabab.
September Start
The first school day in September, Tuesday 7th, is reserved for Year 7 and Year 11. They will receive their timetables and start their Beckfoot Upper Heaton journey.
Nell Bank
Our Beckfoot Upper Heaton learner underpins all that we do here at school and there is no better way to explore those skills than an outdoor education experience. We take the whole of the year group to Nell Bank Outdoor Education Centre for the day to take part in fun engaging activities. It’s a great way to make new friends too.
SEND
We also appreciate that students who do have special educational needs may require a more bespoke Transition experience. Our designated SENDCO and Year 7 Pastoral Team will make sure that those students are fully understood and their needs and concerns met.
Transition Review in October
After spending a half term with us we invite families in to meet with tutors again. Hear from both your child and tutor about their time at Beckfoot Upper Heaton so far and how they have settled in. It is a great chance to ask questions and, importantly, hear from your child about their Beckfoot Upper Heaton goals.
