Welcome to Year 8

After completing their first year at Beckfoot Upper Heaton, students will be accustomed to school expectations, values and behaviours. Year 8 students will be role models to our new Year 7s, and we therefore expect them to uphold our learning habits and act as prime examples to our new students.

Wider Opportunities

Extracurricular clubs – We are committed to providing as many enrichment activities as possible for our students.

Trips and enrichment experiences run throughout the year and can range from residential trips, subject-specific trips and reward trips.

Enrichment week is the final week of school before Summer, where students will have the opportunity to take part in an activity of their choice.

SSAT Awards, the Student Leadership Accreditation is an innovative way of recognising students’ leadership skills and the impact that they have in the classroom, across the school, and in the wider community.

Students will recap the importance of a design brief and look at ACCESSFM as a design product, students will also receive an introduction to the concept of orthographic drawing.

Project: Students will make a moneybox

Food

Development of more complex skills like slicing and shaping. Introduction to heat transference before looking at the key elements of diet and allergies. What is required for a balanced diet?

Recipes covered: Pizza toast, quesadilla, plaited bread, Dutch apple cake and mac n cheese

Textiles

Research on Yayoi Kusama to create a design in their style. Students will learn core skills like tie-dye, applique and sewing skills.

Project: Students will make a cushion based on the style of Yayoi Kusama

Geography

How is urbanisation transforming cities? Students will explore the worlds biggest cities and understand why some are growing faster than others and the impacts of growth. There will be a focus on squatter settlements.

UK urban futures, can cities become sustainable? Students will explore the impact of urban growth in the UK, they will learn about where to build new houses, traffic congestion and solutions, urban inequality and regeneration, with a focus on sustainable living.

 

How do rivers shape the land in Yorkshire? Students will be introduced to concept of fluvial (river) processes of erosion, transportation and deposition and how they shape the landscape, with focus on the River Aire.

Can a rivers rage be controlled? Students will explore the reasons for flood hazards and how people respond to these, they will develop their understanding of the challenges of river management.

Why is Haiti so vulnerable to natural hazards? Introduction to natural hazards and Haiti as a multiple hazard location and the issues that make the country so vulnerable.

How does the use of glaciated landscapes cause conflict? Students will investigate the processes of erosion, transportation and deposition and its creation of distinctive landforms in the Lake District and how people use the area. Students will understand how human activity can cause conflict and the need for sustainable management of upland areas.

Transatlantic slave trade – How was Britain connected to the slave trade and how did it impact the lives of those enslaved?

Can I trust the internet: This e-safety unit is based on the BeetFreekz ‘be internet citizens’ unit of work, exploring online safety, digital literacy, media reliability and gambling hooks.

Respect: Students will explore discrimination including gender stereotypes, racism, gender identity, sexual orientation and consent.

Legal or illegal: Students will learn about drugs and alcohol and their effects, how they can be misused and the pressures relating to drug use.

Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare: Students will be introduced to Shakespearean tragedy as they explore the concept of Greek tragedy and make links to related literature and non-fiction such as sonnets and modern day crime issues.

Animal Farm by George Orwell: Students will appreciate the writer’s craft in a political context and learn concepts such as allegory and diatribe.
