What is the new legislation?

Since September 2014 new legislation for SEND was implemented in schools. As part of that change the terms School Action, School Action Plus and Statement are no longer in use. Bradford Children’s Services have adopted the range of provision model with the term Statement being replaced by Education Health Care Plan.

We are as a school keen to ensure all students have access to after school clubs, educational visits, rewards trips etc. and have appropriate risk assessments in place to enable this. Please contact us if there are changes to your child’s physical, sensory or medical requirements. You can contact the school via phone on 01274 493533 or via email on reception@beckfootupperheaton.org.

Who are the best people to talk to in Beckfoot Upper Heaton about my child’s difficulties with learning/Special Educational Needs or disability (SEND)?

We have a range of support models which reflect the needs of individual and groups of pupils.

Quality First Teaching: the CoSENCOs (Laura Newcombe and Tracy Ward) are available to give advice and support to teaching colleagues regarding how best to meet the needs of SEND youngsters in class.

School Support (K designation on SEND Register): Learning Support Assistants and the SENCO offer in class support to small groups and individual students in mainstream classes.

Education, Health and Care Plan (E designation on SEND Register): the team offer small group teaching to support students around the provision which is outlined in their EHCP, alongside individualised and bespoke mainstream classroom support

ICT equipment (laptops) for PD students / scanning with supernova programme for visually impaired students are also in use in school.

The school offers a number of designated supervised quiet areas for use by SEND students at break and lunchtime for example the large group room and LRC which students can access by agreement with SENCO and LRC manager. Early break and lunches as well as alternative venues are also available by agreement.

How can I let the school know I have concerns about my child’s learning in school?

You can contact us at any time and in specific cases we are happy to arrange a home visit. Our phone number is 01274 493533 or if you would like to email us our email address is reception@beckfootupperheaton.org.

How will the school let me know if they have any concerns about my child’s learning?

Students and parents/carers are invited to each of the three Review Days each academic year, when the SEND team as well as teaching colleagues are happy to meet to discuss any concerns.

How is extra support allocated to students and how do they move between ranges?

The school has adopted the Bradford Children’s Services range of provision model since June 2014

The school collates progress data half termly which is given to your child to take home. This along with other school based assessments and information from additional services is plotted onto our provision map system. This determines along with internal referrals, our own observations, feedback from students and parents/carers how support is allocated.

Who are the other people providing services to students with SEND in school?

The school is able to access the following services to give advice and guidance:

- The Hearing Impairment team
- The Visual Impairment team
- The Autism team
- The Learning support team
- CAMHS
- School health team
- Parent Partnership (Barnardos)

The advice and guidance is then shared with colleagues in school, and parents/carers via Learning Plans and or dialogue. The exception is that which is of a confidential nature.

Teaching and non-teaching colleagues receive additional support and training around inclusive SEND strategies.

How will the school support my child’s transitions?

We work closely with primary colleagues to offer a planned transition programme which may involve regular visits by your child to the school prior to September. This will also involve information gathering so we are all prepared to meet your child’s needs.
